Event Description:
Come and learn more about the legislative process with the ultimate goal of becoming more comfortable with personal advocacy!

The State Legislature in Olympia is a high energy and exciting place to be during each year’s legislative session. Yet, the legislative process can also be complicated to follow and difficult to understand if one is new to the process. This does not mean that one must have the experience and knowledge of an Olympia “insider” to appreciate what is happening and to be an effective advocate. Knowledge of the process helps equip those interested in becoming effective advocates.

Cliff Webster, Lobbyist for the Architects and Engineers Legislative Council, and Van Collins, President of ACEC, will explain the process and make it much more transparent and comfortable to understand.  Van and Cliff will cover such topics as how bills are introduced, how the committee system works, and what happens on the floors of the Senate and House of Representatives. They will also impart a general understanding of the politics at work in Olympia today.  Most importantly, they will explain why each of you are the best advocates for issues that concern the engineering industry.

About the Speakers

Cliff Webster is a principal with Carney Badley Spellman where he heads the firm's legislative and administrative practice group. His government affairs practice focuses on representing businesses and business and professional associations in the state capital. He has represented the Architects & Engineers Legislative Council for more than 25 years.

Mr. Webster has been called one of a handful of "lobbyists to call to get things done" in the state capital by Washington Law & Politics. The magazine profiled him as one of five lobbyists "whose high levels of integrity, know-how and people skills have garnered [him] respect and influence on both sides of the aisle." In 2006 and 2011 – 2014, Mr. Webster was named a Super Lawyer in political law and government relations. No attorney-lobbyist has been recognized as a Super Lawyer more often. Seattle Business Monthly identified him as "one of Olympia's elite lobbyists" who has "become one of Washington's most sought after and successful lobbyists."

Van Collins is the President and CEO of ACEC of Washington. It is part of his daily duties to be an artful and advocate for the engineering industry. Van has over fifteen years in the government affairs area with experience lobbying at all levels of government. Prior to coming to ACEC of Washington, Van worked fulltime in Olympia as the General Counsel and Chief Lobbyist for the Associated General Contractors of Washington.

Van has a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Washington and a law degree from the University of Puget Sound.
